Albany, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for eastern New York and parts of New England as freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions early Saturday.
The National Weather Service warns that ice accumulations could range from a light glaze to up to one-tenth of an inch. The advisory is active from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and covers areas including the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, Hudson Valley, and parts of western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Slippery roads, sidewalks, and bridges are likely, making travel hazardous.
Early morning commuters and travelers should take precautions, especially along major roadways like I-90, I-87, and I-91. Bridges and overpasses are particularly susceptible to ice accumulation, increasing the risk of accidents. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time for travel, and avoid unnecessary trips until conditions improve. Pedestrians should use caution when stepping outside, as icy surfaces could lead to slips and falls.
The freezing rain is expected to begin during the overnight hours and transition to rain by midday as temperatures rise above freezing. Saturday’s high will reach the upper 30s, offering some relief. The remainder of the weekend will see drier conditions, with Sunday bringing highs in the low 40s across the region. However, refreezing during overnight hours could cause lingering issues into early next week.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local weather services and use tools like 511 for real-time road conditions. Be prepared with ice melt and extra care when navigating steps and walkways.
