Clovis, N.M. – Residents in Curry, Lea, and Roosevelt counties are under a tornado watch until 10 p.m. Friday as a powerful system brings the threat of severe storms to eastern New Mexico.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail are all possible through the evening hours. The watch, issued at 1:55 p.m., affects communities including Clovis, Portales, and Hobbs. Residents should closely monitor local alerts and have a plan to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

Local emergency managers urge everyone to stay off roads if storms intensify, especially along U.S. Highway 70 and U.S. Highway 84, where visibility and debris may become a hazard. Power outages and downed trees are possible in stronger cells, and residents are advised to charge devices and review emergency plans. School activities and outdoor events may be delayed or canceled as storms approach.

This is the first significant tornado watch for the area in spring 2025, and conditions could change rapidly as storms move in from Texas. The tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., with further updates or warnings expected if storms strengthen. Residents should remain alert and prepared for changing weather tonight.
