Omaha, NE – A strong storm system is forecast to bring heavy rain and gusty winds to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa starting Monday night. The system could drop over an inch of rain in some areas, increasing the risk of localized flooding along low-lying roads, creeks, and near the I-80 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday afternoon, intensifying into the evening hours. Gusty winds and steady rainfall may create difficult travel conditions, particularly on highways and rural roads. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 1.5 inches are likely, with higher amounts possible in isolated areas.
Drivers should plan for reduced visibility and standing water on roads during the Monday evening commute and overnight hours. Minor flooding is expected along poorly drained areas and creek beds, particularly in northeast Nebraska where rainfall totals are less predictable.
Tuesday will bring sunny skies and a high of 51°F, with calmer conditions expected as the storm system moves east. However, Tuesday night’s low near 34°F may cause wet surfaces to freeze, further impacting road safety.
The extended forecast shows a mix of sunny skies and breezy conditions through midweek. Wednesday’s high is expected to reach 42°F, with winds up to 23 mph.
