Harlan, KY – Residents of eastern Kentucky should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Thursday morning as up to three inches of snow is expected in higher elevations. A winter weather advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to noon, impacting major routes such as US-421, US-119, and KY-160.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin early Thursday and fall at a moderate to heavy rate for several hours. Lower elevations could see up to one inch of snow on grassy surfaces, while areas above 2,000 feet, including Black Mountain and Pine Mountain, are forecast to receive up to three inches. Untreated roads in these areas may become slushy and slippery, posing risks for morning commuters.

Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution, especially on steep or winding roads. Reduced visibility during snowfall is likely to worsen travel conditions. For the latest road conditions, visit GoKY.gov before heading out.

Temperatures on Thursday are expected to reach the upper 30s, which could help melt some snow by afternoon. However, shaded and untreated surfaces may remain icy into Friday morning. A warming trend is forecast for the weekend, with highs climbing into the 40s and lows near freezing.

Stay updated on local weather forecasts and travel advisories to ensure safety during the snow event. Residents in higher elevations should consider delaying non-essential travel until roads improve.
