Jackson, KY – A cold weather advisory has been issued for eastern Kentucky, with temperatures expected to plunge to dangerous levels Sunday night.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, warns of wind chills reaching as low as 10 degrees below zero between 7 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday. The advisory affects several counties, including Pike, Whitley, Harlan, Laurel, and Rowan.
According to the NWS, the combination of freezing temperatures and strong winds could lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity, dress in multiple layers, and wear hats and gloves. Older adults, children, and pets are particularly vulnerable during extreme cold.
Extended exposure to sub-zero temperatures could also cause water pipes to freeze and rupture. Officials recommend wrapping exposed pipes or allowing faucets to drip to prevent freezing. Additionally, residents should ensure portable heaters are used safely and avoid using grills or generators indoors to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Emergency officials urge frequent checks on neighbors and family members during the cold snap. “Stay informed and prepared,” NWS officials advised in their Saturday afternoon statement.
The advisory will remain in effect until noon Monday.
