Davenport, Iowa – Eastern Iowa residents should prepare for a wet and potentially hazardous Sunday as widespread showers and thunderstorms are set to roll in by midday, bringing a heightened risk for flash flooding through early Monday. The National Weather Service warns that repeated rounds of heavy rain could drop more than an inch across low-lying areas, with the heaviest bursts falling after dark.
According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect for Scott County and surrounding areas starting Sunday morning, as moist Gulf air meets a slow-moving front. Rainfall rates could quickly overwhelm storm drains, especially along River Drive in Davenport and in flood-prone neighborhoods south of Locust Street. South winds near 10 mph may also accompany the storms, but the main concern is water pooling on roads and reduced visibility for drivers.
Travelers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and delay non-essential trips late Sunday night. Those attending outdoor events or working outside should have indoor shelter options ready, as lightning and brief gusty winds are also possible.
Storms taper Monday afternoon, but more unsettled weather is expected midweek, with scattered showers returning Tuesday and Wednesday.
