Davenport, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through the Iowa-Illinois border region today, bringing the threat of hail and potentially dangerous travel conditions, particularly near Fairfield, Iowa and into northwest Illinois.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms could intensify this afternoon and evening with hailstones up to one inch in diameter. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) is in effect, covering areas from southeast Iowa to Freeport, Illinois. Storms will move northeast at around 40 mph, affecting highways including I-80 and I-74 during peak evening commute hours.

Cities like Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, and Rock Island could see rapid shifts in conditions, with winds nearing 40 mph and localized downpours expected. Officials advise residents to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during active storms, and monitor for spotter activation alerts later today.

Looking ahead, the risk continues Thursday and Friday with more rain and thunder expected. Another stronger system may arrive Monday into Tuesday with a broader severe threat.

Storm warnings remain in effect through late Wednesday night. Additional updates may follow as new systems develop.
