Savannah, GA – A tornado watch is in effect for Eastern Georgia as Hurricane Helene brings increasing winds and severe weather conditions to the region. The watch was issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Thursday morning and is expected to last until 9 p.m.

According to the NWS, several tornadoes are likely due to the strong low-level winds on the periphery of Hurricane Helene. The watch zone covers an area approximately 70 miles east and west of a line from Savannah to Columbia, South Carolina.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and be prepared to seek shelter should conditions worsen. The NWS advises people in the area to monitor local weather updates and have emergency plans ready. Aviation activity may also be affected, with potential for extreme turbulence and wind gusts up to 60 knots.

Stay tuned for further updates on the tornado threat and any warnings that may follow throughout the day.
