Lamar, Colo. – Tornado risk remains elevated across southeastern Colorado this Wednesday afternoon as strong to severe thunderstorms move through Prowers and Baca counties, bringing threats of hail and damaging winds until 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the window for the most intense activity is between 3 and 9 p.m. MDT. Hail between 1 and 1.5 inches in diameter and wind gusts up to 65 mph are the primary hazards, with a low—but not negligible—chance for a tornado, especially into the evening hours.

Communities such as Lamar, Springfield, and Holly should remain on high alert. Travel on U.S. Highway 50 and Highway 287 may be hazardous due to sudden downpours, strong winds, and reduced visibility. Farther west, Bent County sits in a lower-confidence zone but should still prepare for fast-developing storms.

Now is the time to review emergency plans, charge mobile devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Take cover immediately if a warning is issued for your area.

Storm threats are expected to subside after 9 p.m., though more advisories are possible if conditions continue to evolve across the plains.
