East Texas – A tornado watch has been issued for East Texas and surrounding areas, warning of severe weather through 6 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the alert, highlighting the risk of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds. Residents in cities like Beaumont, Lufkin, and Huntsville are advised to stay prepared for sudden weather changes. The NWS warns that isolated hailstones could reach the size of ping-pong balls, and wind gusts could exceed 75 mph.
According to the NWS, over 2.7 million people, 1,142 schools, and 133 hospitals in the region are within the potential threat zone. Emergency services are urging residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including weather radios and mobile apps.
Meteorologists predict the storms will develop rapidly this afternoon, increasing the chances of localized tornadoes. Those in mobile homes or other vulnerable structures should seek sturdy shelters.
“Now is the time to review your emergency plans and ensure you’re ready to act quickly,” an NWS spokesperson said.
Local authorities recommend keeping emergency kits stocked with water, flashlights, and a battery-operated radio. Avoid unnecessary travel as roads may become hazardous due to flying debris or downed power lines.
