Morristown, TN – A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and icy conditions to portions of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Snowfall totals could reach up to 6 inches by early Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm began intensifying Friday afternoon. Areas west of Interstates 81 and 75 are forecast to see 3 to 6 inches of snow. Meanwhile, locations east of these interstates may experience 2 to 4 inches of snow mixed with sleet or freezing rain.
The NWS stated the storm will likely impact Friday evening commutes and create hazardous road conditions overnight. Bridges and overpasses are expected to become especially slick, with icy patches forming due to freezing precipitation.
Residents are urged to limit travel, but those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. Road conditions are likely to remain dangerous through Saturday morning, with icy spots persisting even as precipitation tapers off.
Temperatures are expected to hover around freezing, contributing to continued risks of ice accumulation, especially in higher elevations such as the Smoky Mountains. Authorities recommend staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
The winter storm warning is in effect until 7 a.m. Saturday. Updates on road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.
Motorists and residents should prepare for power outages and delays, as the storm may affect utility services in some regions.
