Morristown, TN – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the mountains of East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, effective from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Forecasters warn of heavy snow and strong winds that could create hazardous travel conditions and disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service, areas above 2,500 feet could see snow accumulations ranging from 3 to 5 inches, with localized amounts reaching up to 7 inches in the Smoky Mountains. Winds are expected to gust as high as 45 mph, potentially causing blowing and drifting snow.

The storm is anticipated to begin Friday afternoon, with significant impacts likely during the Friday evening commute. Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Residents in affected areas, including Johnson, Unicoi, and Sevier counties, as well as portions of southwest Virginia such as Wise and Washington counties, are encouraged to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.
