Northern California’s Sierra Nevada region was struck by two consecutive earthquakes early Tuesday morning near Canyon Dam, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The first quake, a magnitude 2.9, occurred at 8:03 a.m. local time, followed by a second tremor of magnitude 2.6 just minutes later at 8:06 a.m. Both earthquakes were shallow, occurring less than 2 km below the surface. The epicenters were located roughly 2-3 kilometers from Canyon Dam, CA.
According to USGS data, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries, though the region is prone to seismic activity. Residents near the epicenter are encouraged to report their experiences to the USGS. The agency tracks responses to assess the extent of the shaking.
The Sierra Nevada region lies along several fault lines, making it seismically active. Emergency services remain on alert for any aftershocks or further seismic activity. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and review earthquake safety protocols.
