Fredonia, AZ – A minor earthquake struck near the Utah-Arizona border Thursday afternoon, shaking areas around Fredonia and the Kaibab Indian Reservation.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 2.9 magnitude quake at 10.46 a.m. MST. Its epicenter was located 14 kilometers east of Fredonia at a depth of 19.4 kilometers.
According to the USGS, residents in nearby areas, including parts of southern Utah, reported light shaking. No significant damage or injuries have been reported. Community responses on the USGS website classified the quake’s intensity as “weak.”
The area is seismically active due to its proximity to the Colorado Plateau’s edge. Experts suggest minor earthquakes like this are common and rarely cause structural damage.
Authorities encourage residents to remain prepared for future seismic activity. Safety officials remind the public to “drop, cover, and hold on” during any tremor.
