Duluth, Minnesota – People heading near the Lake Superior shoreline around the Twin Ports are urged to use extreme caution as shifting ice conditions create growing safety concerns, particularly near public access points and heavily traveled areas close to I-35.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth and analysis from the U.S. National Ice Center, Lake Superior near the Twin Ports is currently covered by a mix of ice types, including newly formed ice, thicker packed ice, and areas of open water. Recent analysis shows that pack ice has been slowly drifting to the northeast, exposing unstable shoreline ice that had previously appeared solid.

Two primary zones of fast ice are currently attached to shore. One extends near Duluth from around 40th Avenue East to 16th Street South near Park Point, while another stretches from near Wisconsin Point eastward along the South Shore. Forecasters stress that even ice that looks solid can break free, crack, or shift without warning due to wind, currents, and temperature changes.

The presence of open water just offshore increases the danger, as ice movement can occur rapidly. Areas near Canal Park, the Duluth harbor, and shoreline access points close to I-35 and US-2 are of particular concern, where curious onlookers, anglers, or photographers may be tempted to venture out.

Emergency officials strongly advise staying off the ice entirely. Ice conditions on Lake Superior are especially unpredictable compared to inland lakes, and rescue operations are extremely dangerous when ice fails.

Residents and visitors are reminded that there is no such thing as completely safe ice on Lake Superior. What appears stable one moment can become unstable the next, especially during periods of wind or subtle warming.

Ice conditions are expected to continue evolving, and additional updates may be issued as movement continues. Until then, officials urge everyone to admire the lake from a safe distance and avoid venturing onto the ice as hazardous conditions persist through the end of the week.
