Duluth, Minnesota – Thick wildfire smoke and worsening air quality will continue to blanket much of northern and northeastern Minnesota through Wednesday and into Thursday, triggering alerts and limiting visibility along major roadways like U.S. Highway 53 and Route 2.

According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until noon Wednesday due to unhealthy levels of fine particle pollution. The smoke, driven by Canadian wildfires and a passing cold front, will persist across Duluth, Hibbing, International Falls, and surrounding tribal nations. Those with heart or lung conditions, older adults, and children should limit outdoor activity.

By Thursday, a new round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop after 1 p.m., with wind gusts up to 25 mph. The National Weather Service in Duluth warns that storms may intensify into Thursday night, bringing additional travel concerns and brief downpours.

Expect roads to remain slick into Thursday evening, especially on elevated surfaces near Duluth and along the North Shore. Residents are urged to close windows to reduce smoke indoors, and limit non-essential driving through midweek.
