Washington, D.C. – A powerful winter storm is set to hit the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) region, with up to half an inch of ice expected. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an ice storm warning, cautioning residents about treacherous road conditions and possible power outages.

According to the NWS, freezing rain will begin late Wednesday night and continue into early Thursday. Ice accumulation of 0.25 to 0.5 inches could bring down tree limbs and power lines, leading to widespread outages. Areas west of I-95, including northern Virginia and western Maryland, will see the highest ice buildup.

Authorities urge residents to prepare for dangerous travel and potential utility disruptions. If possible, avoid driving until conditions improve. Crews are on standby to treat roads, but ice accumulation could make surfaces extremely hazardous.

Temperatures will rise Thursday morning, transitioning the freezing rain into regular rainfall. However, the lingering ice could still impact the morning commute.
