Michigan – The first true winter punch of December is taking hold across Detroit and southeast Michigan this morning as a potent system brings snow, freezing rain, and gusty winds through midweek. Roads glisten with a thin layer of slush, the air sharp and damp — a preview of what’s to come as this multi-day winter event unfolds.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac warn of heavy snow mixed with freezing rain through Wednesday morning, with accumulations near 3–5 inches possible north and west of the city. Along the I-75 and I-94 corridors, icy conditions are likely through early Wednesday, particularly during the evening commute.

By Wednesday, snow may briefly change to rain before colder air surges back in, dropping temperatures into the teens by Thursday night. Winds will gust near 25–30 mph, creating areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially across open stretches and near Lake St. Clair.

Heading into the weekend, conditions dry out but stay frigid — highs in the 20s and low 30s, with morning wind chills dipping into the single digits. Another quick-moving system could bring light snow by Friday night into Saturday, reinforcing the early-winter chill.

5-Day Outlook (Dec. 9–13)

  • Wednesday: High 38°F, rain/snow mix, gusts up to 25 mph.
  • Thursday: High 29°F, partly sunny, brisk.
  • Friday: High 29°F, snow chance 40%.
  • Saturday: High 23°F, scattered snow showers.
  • Sunday: High 27°F, partly cloudy, cold.
