Detroit, Michigan – Skies over southeast Michigan could light up with a rare view of the Northern Lights Sunday night, thanks to clear skies and strong geomagnetic activity.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, conditions are favorable for aurora viewing as far south as metro Detroit through early Monday morning. Hamtramck, Dearborn, and Royal Oak may catch faint green or red bands low on the northern horizon between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., especially in darker areas away from city lights.

The aurora show comes ahead of a rapid warm-up. Monday will be sunny with highs near 83°F and mild southwest winds. On Tuesday, the heat builds further with temperatures topping out around 87°F and gusts as high as 24 mph — prompting elevated fire danger and dry air alerts in some parts of southeast Michigan.

Residents are encouraged to step outside tonight for a possible sky show, then prepare for hot, breezy conditions through Tuesday. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and keep tabs on midweek storm chances.
