Des Moines, IA – Des Moines residents are waking up to bitter cold this Thursday, with wind chills plunging to as low as -5 degrees. However, a warm-up is on the horizon as the weekend promises milder temperatures and sunshine.
According to the National Weather Service, Thursday’s high will only reach 22 degrees, with a northwest wind gusting up to 22 mph. These conditions will make for icy roads and hazardous travel, especially during the morning commute. By Friday, temperatures will climb to a high of 38 degrees under sunny skies, signaling a noticeable shift in weather.
Saturday and Sunday bring the warmest days of the week, with highs of 49 and 55 degrees, respectively. Both days will feature mostly sunny skies and light winds, making it ideal for outdoor plans or holiday shopping. Overnight lows will hover in the mid-30s, a stark contrast to the freezing temperatures earlier in the week.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution during the colder mornings, especially on Interstate 235 and surrounding roadways where patches of ice could persist. With improving conditions by Friday afternoon, travelers should enjoy smoother and safer journeys.
The extended forecast shows more mild weather heading into next week, with highs near 46 degrees on Monday under mostly sunny skies. Residents are encouraged to bundle up today but take advantage of the sunny and pleasant conditions through the weekend.
