Des Moines, IA – A powerful early spring storm is bringing blizzard conditions to Iowa overnight into Wednesday, with heavy winds and snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions. Strong northwesterly winds, with gusts up to 60 mph, will contribute to whiteout conditions in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, snowfall has already begun in western Iowa, with rain transitioning to snow across central parts of the state. The blizzard-like conditions will persist into Wednesday morning before gradually improving as winds weaken. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for portions of central, south-central, and southeast Iowa, including Tama, Poweshiek, Mahaska, Monroe, Wapello, Wayne, Appanoose, and Davis counties, until 3 p.m. CST Wednesday.

Total snow accumulations are expected to reach up to two inches, but the primary concern remains dangerous winds and reduced visibility. The combination of falling and blowing snow could cause visibilities to drop below a half-mile, especially in open rural areas. The NWS warns that these conditions could significantly impact the Wednesday morning commute. Additionally, strong winds may lead to tree damage and scattered power outages.

Travelers are advised to use caution, slow down, and check real-time road conditions via the Iowa 511 app or website. Conditions are expected to improve by late Wednesday as wind speeds decrease.
