Denver, Colorado – Snow-covered lanes along I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel are already slowing traffic early Wednesday, and heavier bursts through midday could drop visibility below a half mile across the Front Range Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver and Boulder, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Front Range Mountains through early Thursday morning. Additional snowfall of 6 to 14 inches is expected in higher elevations, including areas near Berthoud Pass, Loveland Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass. The Park and Gore ranges could see 2 to 5 inches, with locally higher totals under persistent bands.

Road conditions along I-70 west of Golden, US-40 over Berthoud Pass and US-6 near Loveland Pass will likely deteriorate quickly during heavier snow. CDOT crews are monitoring for chain restrictions, especially for commercial vehicles climbing toward the Eisenhower Tunnel. Slick spots and compacted snow may persist into the evening commute.

Lower elevations, including Denver, Aurora and Boulder, will see mainly rain showers with limited travel impact. A few thunderstorms could develop across the plains, but significant accumulation is not expected along I-25 through the metro.

Mountain travelers should delay non-essential trips, carry traction devices and check cotrip.org for updated road conditions. Sudden slowdowns and icy bridges remain the primary hazards above 7,000 feet.

Snow tapers late Wednesday night, but icy stretches may linger into Thursday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase during the day.
