Des Moines, IA – A dense fog advisory remains in effect for large portions of central, south-central, and north-central Iowa, creating hazardous travel conditions early Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory, which is active until 10 a.m. Visibility is expected to drop to a quarter mile or less in affected areas, including cities such as Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Ottumwa.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory spans multiple counties, including Tama, Jasper, Polk, Story, and Emmet, among others. Drivers are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain a safe following distance to avoid accidents caused by reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to remain cautious, especially in rural and open areas where fog conditions may intensify. The advisory comes amid mild winter temperatures that have contributed to the fog’s persistence.

Motorists should monitor updates and check conditions before traveling this morning. Visibility is expected to improve gradually after the advisory expires.
