Wilmington, Delaware – Triple-digit heat indexes and worsening air quality will grip Delaware on Thursday as temperatures climb to 91°F under hazy skies.
According to the National Weather Service, calm morning winds will shift westward by late morning, drawing in lingering haze and trapping heat through the afternoon. The hottest conditions are expected between 1 and 5 p.m. Visibility along I-95 near Wilmington may be reduced, especially during the evening commute. Those with respiratory conditions should limit time outdoors and use indoor air filtration when possible.
Drivers should keep sunglasses and water bottles on hand and avoid extended idling. The Department of Natural Resources has not issued a formal air quality alert yet, but similar conditions last month led to Code Orange advisories in New Castle County. Thursday’s sun and stagnant air could prompt similar alerts.
Relief won’t arrive until late Friday, when a weak system brings the chance for scattered thunderstorms. Rainfall may be light but could briefly disrupt travel.
Here’s a look at the extended five-day forecast for Wilmington:
- Wednesday (June 11): High 85°F, sunny with haze in the afternoon.
- Thursday (June 12): High 91°F, sunny, hazy and hot.
- Friday (June 13): High 87°F, mostly sunny, chance of T-storms after 2 p.m.
