Washington, DC – Spring may be here, but the weather remains risky as a Fire Weather Watch continues across the Washington-Baltimore region through 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Strong northwest winds up to 30 mph, dry vegetation, and low humidity levels—dropping to 15% in parts of Virginia—have created conditions ideal for fast-moving wildfires. The National Weather Service warns residents near and west of I-95, including Annandale, Baltimore, and the District, to stay alert. Outdoor burning should be avoided, and residents should secure lightweight items and be prepared for potential air quality issues.

According to the National Weather Service, the Fire Weather Watch covers parts of Northern Virginia, central Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with the highest fire potential expected from late Wednesday morning through early evening. The combination of gusty winds and dry air poses risks especially in wooded and grassy areas.

The rest of the week sees calmer conditions. Thursday brings sunny skies and highs near 59°F. Winds will ease by Thursday night, providing relief from fire risks. Friday will be partly sunny, though a slight chance of afternoon showers is expected.

Five-Day Spring Forecast for Annandale, VA:

  • Thursday: Sunny, high near 59°F, light southwest wind.
  • Friday: Slight chance of showers, high 66°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high 79°F.
  • Sunday: Chance of showers, high near 60°F.
  • Monday: Partly sunny, high 74°F, slight rain chance.
