Newport, NC – Powerful winds and rough surf are expected across Eastern North Carolina today, with gusts up to 50 mph and waves reaching 12 feet along the coast. Residents should prepare for possible power outages, hazardous driving conditions, and dangerous swimming conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, with sustained southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. A High Surf Advisory is also in place until 10 p.m., impacting beaches from Cape Hatteras to Surf City. Strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, and high-profile vehicles may struggle on open roads and bridges.
Looking ahead, Washington’s Birthday (Monday) will bring sunshine but colder temperatures, with highs near 50°F. By midweek, rain returns, with a 90% chance of precipitation Wednesday night. An Arctic blast will push into the region late in the week, dropping temperatures into the 30s by Friday.
Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak winds, and stay out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions.
