Chicago, IL – A sharp cold front moving into Illinois tonight will bring snow and dangerously low wind chills through midweek, creating hazardous travel conditions. Snow accumulation of up to 1 inch is expected near and east of I-55 by Monday morning, with untreated surfaces at risk of becoming slick.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, wind chills will plummet Monday night into Tuesday, reaching as low as -15 degrees. These life-threatening temperatures make frostbite a concern for exposed skin within minutes. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and bring pets indoors.
Monday will start with partly sunny skies and a high near 18 degrees. However, west winds gusting up to 25 mph will keep conditions bitterly cold. By Tuesday, subzero temperatures will persist during the morning hours, with a high near 17 degrees expected later in the day.
The cold snap is forecasted to ease by Thursday when temperatures rise into the mid-30s. Sunshine will dominate much of the week despite the freezing start. Snow is not expected after Tuesday, but untreated roads may remain icy due to the prolonged freeze.
Drivers along major routes like I-55 and US-24 should exercise caution, especially during morning commutes when visibility may be reduced, and icy patches are likely. Local officials urge travelers to leave extra space between vehicles, reduce speeds, and check road conditions before heading out.
