Des Moines, IA – A bitter Arctic air mass will grip Iowa this week, bringing dangerous wind chills, snow, and hazardous travel conditions. Residents should prepare for subzero temperatures and icy roads as the deep freeze settles in.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will continue through Saturday night before giving way to a brutal cold snap. Sunday will be blustery, with wind chills dropping as low as -10°F. Washington’s Birthday brings another round of snow, with highs struggling to reach the single digits. By Tuesday, morning lows will plummet near -11°F, with wind chills even colder.

Blowing snow could cause whiteout conditions, making travel hazardous on major roadways, including I-35 and I-80. Drivers should check road conditions via the Iowa 511 app and allow extra time for commutes.

Looking ahead, bitterly cold temperatures will continue through midweek, with only minor warming by Thursday. Anyone venturing outside should dress in layers and limit exposure to prevent frostbite. Power outages and heating issues could also become concerns as the extreme cold persists.

Stay tuned for updates as this Arctic blast unfolds.
