Washington, D.C. – The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, warning of hazardous ice glaze conditions expected through 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Freezing rain is forecast to begin early Tuesday morning, with light ice accumulation likely to create slick and hazardous roads. The advisory impacts areas along and west of U.S. Route 15 starting at 5 a.m., reaching the Interstate 95 corridor by sunrise. Northern regions may see a brief mix of snow before precipitation transitions to freezing rain.
According to the NWS, total ice accumulation will range from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are particularly at risk of becoming dangerously slippery. Commuters are urged to allow extra time and drive cautiously during the morning rush.
The hazardous conditions are expected to subside as temperatures rise by midday, but untreated surfaces may remain icy into the afternoon. The advisory warns residents to watch their first steps outside, as sidewalks and driveways could also pose a slipping hazard.
In areas such as Garrett County, Maryland, and parts of West Virginia, freezing rain may persist into the evening. These regions could see slightly higher ice accumulation, along with a mix of light snow.
Residents should monitor weather updates and road conditions through local authorities and the 511 hotline. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and avoid travel during peak freezing rain periods.
