Grand Junction, CO – An extreme cold warning is in effect across several regions of Colorado from 6 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday, with dangerously low wind chills as severe as 40 degrees below zero expected.

The warning impacts the Upper Yampa River Basin, Upper Gunnison River Valley, and Central Yampa River Basin, including cities like Steamboat Springs, Gunnison, and Meeker. Higher elevations, including Aspen, Telluride, and Vail, are also under the advisory.

According to the National Weather Service, frostbite on exposed skin can occur within 10 minutes in these conditions. Residents are advised to dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and avoid outdoor exposure. Pets should be kept indoors, and livestock provided with adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water.

Additional precautions include monitoring elderly family and neighbors, ensuring proper use of portable heaters, and avoiding the use of generators or grills indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Wind chills are expected to ease after 11 a.m. Tuesday, but residents should continue to exercise caution. Keep updated by following local weather advisories.
