Omaha, NE – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across the Central U.S., bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions to parts of the Plains and Midwest. The blizzard, expected to last through Thursday morning, has already led to road closures and power outages in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour will continue across Iowa and southern Minnesota, with gusts up to 50-70 mph creating dangerous whiteout conditions. The storm is also expected to impact Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Travel disruptions are widespread, with major highways becoming impassable due to drifting snow. Power outages are increasing as high winds and heavy snowfall damage power lines. Officials warn residents to avoid travel in affected areas and prepare for prolonged outages.

Snow accumulations could exceed 6 inches in parts of Nebraska and Iowa, with Wisconsin expected to see 4-12 inches. Strong winds in the Southern Plains are also causing risks of tree damage and reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautions against extreme cold and power disruptions
