Damage Survey Results: Two EF-1 Tornadoes Strike Mississippi on December 28

Jackson, MS – Two EF-1 tornadoes from the December 28 severe weather event in Mississippi have been confirmed by the National Weather Service. Survey teams completed damage assessments and released the findings Wednesday.

According to the NWS, the first tornado struck near Pattison, with peak winds reaching 100 mph. The tornado traveled 5.02 miles with a maximum width of 300 yards. It touched down at 5:54 p.m. and ended at 6:02 p.m. CDT. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or fatalities.

The second tornado, near Red Lick, recorded peak winds of 110 mph. It spanned 9.18 miles with a width of 400 yards. This tornado began at 5:55 p.m. and dissipated at 6:04 p.m. CDT. Like the Pattison tornado, there were no injuries or deaths.

Both tornadoes caused damage consistent with an EF-1 rating, including uprooted trees and structural impacts to nearby properties. These storms were part of a larger weather system that impacted the region with strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The National Weather Service reminded residents to remain vigilant during severe weather. Officials encouraged communities to review emergency plans and invest in weather alert systems.
