Lincoln, NE – A critical fire weather warning has been issued for the Central and Northern Plains, as a fast-moving cold front increases the risk of wildfires across the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that gusty winds between 20-30 mph, combined with humidity levels falling as low as 15%, will create dangerous conditions through Monday evening. The dry air and high winds, particularly in central Nebraska and South Dakota, could rapidly spread any fires that ignite. The dry vegetation, also known as ERC fuels, remains in the 98th percentile, signaling the vegetation’s extreme dryness and increased fire risk.

NWS officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning and take steps to prevent accidental ignitions, such as ensuring machinery does not emit sparks. Areas near the upper Mississippi River Valley may also see elevated fire risks as the front progresses eastward.

The warning emphasizes that these conditions are expected to persist into Monday night. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared as updated fire risk assessments are issued.
