Columbia County, WI – The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to stay alert and well-rested after a close call involving a drowsy driver on Interstate 90/94 early Halloween morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver had been on an extended road trip from Michigan to Minnesota and reportedly slept for only an hour before deciding to continue driving through the night. The motorist was lucky to escape injury after the incident, which occurred in Columbia County.

Sheriff Roger Brandner said fatigue can be just as dangerous as impaired driving, slowing reaction times and clouding judgment. “Arriving late is better than not arriving at all,” Brandner said in the department’s post.

Officials shared several safety reminders for drivers:

  • Get 7–8 hours of rest before driving.
  • Pull over and rest if you feel drowsy.
  • Avoid overnight driving when possible.
  • Share the wheel on long trips.

With the busy holiday travel season approaching, deputies are urging drivers to plan ahead and prioritize safety to help prevent fatigue-related crashes.
