Breckenridge, Colo. – Travelers heading through Colorado’s high mountain passes Sunday should prepare for slick roads and whiteout conditions as a fresh round of May snow targets elevations above 10,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday for areas including Rabbit Ears Pass, Berthoud Pass, Winter Park, and Breckenridge. Snow totals between 4 to 8 inches are expected, with winds gusting up to 45 mph reducing visibility on exposed roadways.
The advisory includes the Indian Peaks, Mosquito Range, and Summit County, where heavy snow and strong winds could make travel hazardous, especially on U.S. 40 and I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel. Drivers are urged to slow down and check conditions at COTrip.org or dial 511 before heading out.
Residents and visitors in these areas should avoid non-essential travel, secure outdoor gear, and prepare for possible power fluctuations due to wind. This late-season storm marks a typical spring pattern for Colorado’s high country, where snow can linger well into May.
The advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with more updates possible if conditions worsen overnight.
