Grand Junction, CO – A major winter storm is set to blanket Colorado’s northern and central mountains with heavy snowfall through Thursday afternoon. Travelers are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions and potential delays.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow is forecast for the Park Range, where accumulations of 8 to 16 inches are expected. Nearby areas, including the Flat Tops, Gore, and Elk Mountains, could see between 5 to 10 inches. This will create dangerous conditions on key routes like I-70 and Rabbit Ears Pass, particularly during overnight and early Thursday travel.
Winds in the affected areas could create whiteout conditions, reducing visibility to near zero. Residents and travelers should avoid unnecessary trips and prepare for road closures or delays. Use extreme caution if driving, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready with snow chains and emergency supplies.
The weather will ease by Thursday evening, with conditions improving by Friday. The weekend forecast shows partly cloudy skies with highs reaching 47°F in Grand Junction on Thursday and climbing to 51°F by Saturday. A slight chance of rain or snow is possible Saturday night before clear skies return Sunday.
Mountain communities should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities. Spotters are encouraged to report snow accumulations.
