Grand Junction, CO – A strong winter storm is set to impact Colorado through Friday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions, particularly in the mountains. Windy conditions are expected to accompany the storm, with gusty prefrontal winds creating breezy weather for many areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, mountain snowfall is forecasted to range from 6 to 12 inches, with the highest accumulations expected in the San Juan Mountains. Temperatures will be slightly cooler than Wednesday but remain above seasonal averages.
Winter Weather Advisories take effect Thursday afternoon for the southern mountains, while the northern mountains will see advisories start in the evening. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the southwest San Juan Mountains, where the heaviest snowfall is anticipated.
Snowfall is expected to taper off by Friday night, but another disturbance could bring additional snow on Saturday. The storm is likely to make travel treacherous, especially on key mountain passes, including I-70, US 40, and US 550.
Drivers are urged to check road conditions before traveling, as slick and dangerous roads are expected. The remainder of the weekend is forecasted to be dry and mild as a ridge forms over the western U.S.
