Grand Junction, CO – Snow is set to return to Colorado’s mountains this weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions starting early Saturday morning. Residents in Grand Junction and surrounding areas should prepare for colder temperatures and possible travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the first snow showers are expected around 5 a.m. Saturday, increasing in intensity through Sunday evening. Mountain regions, including key passes along I-70 and Highway 50, could see snowfall accumulations of 2 to 6 inches by Sunday night. The NWS advises drivers to carry chains and prepare for slippery roads, especially during peak travel hours.
Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 45°F with a 40% chance of rain and snow beginning late morning. As temperatures drop overnight, snow is likely to intensify, with lows falling to 23°F. Sunday will remain chilly with a high near 42°F, but conditions are expected to clear by the afternoon.
The five-day outlook suggests a return to partly sunny skies by Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the low 40s. However, another round of light snow showers could arrive Monday night, reminding residents to remain vigilant.
For those heading into the mountains, the NWS recommends postponing travel until conditions improve or ensuring vehicles are equipped for winter driving. Snow is likely to linger through early Monday before a colder air mass settles over the region by midweek.
Stay tuned for updates from the NWS and monitor local road conditions for real-time information. Be safe and plan ahead for this winter weather event.
