Pueblo, Colo. – Heavy snow is piling up across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains Tuesday evening, with some peaks expected to receive up to 6 inches before midnight, complicating travel and triggering hazardous driving conditions above 9,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, scattered snow showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue into tonight across central, east-central, and south-central Colorado. The heaviest accumulation is likely over the higher elevations, especially in the southern Sangre de Cristos. Areas like Cucharas Pass and La Veta Pass may become slick and treacherous as snow rates intensify.
On the plains, including areas near Colorado Springs and Pueblo, thunderstorms are possible this evening along the I-25 corridor. Gusty, erratic winds up to 50 mph and pea-size hail could accompany stronger cells. Cloud-to-ground lightning remains the main concern, especially during the evening commute.
Rain and snow showers are forecast to continue through Wednesday, with more widespread thunderstorm activity developing Thursday across the mountains. Light snow may linger on high peaks into the weekend.
Drivers are urged to delay travel through mountain passes tonight and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Charge electronic devices, secure loose outdoor items, and stay tuned to NWS alerts.
Additional advisories may be issued if storm intensity increases or snow levels drop.
