Colorado Springs, Colorado – Strong thunderstorms are expected to return Sunday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, hail, and lightning to Colorado Springs just in time to disrupt outdoor weekend plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a 50% chance of showers and storms will develop after 1 p.m. Sunday, with activity intensifying across El Paso County through evening. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 50 mph, cloud-to-ground lightning, and small hail — prompting a summer weather alert for central and southeastern Colorado. Isolated areas near the Kansas border may even see nickel-size hail.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid exposed ridgelines and trails during storm activity. Travel along I-25 may become hazardous during downpours or near lightning strikes.

Storm chances continue into Sunday night before another round of active weather returns Monday afternoon. Monday’s storms may again bring wind gusts near 60 mph, hail up to the size of quarters, and locally heavy rainfall.

From Tuesday through Thursday, conditions turn drier with warm, sunny skies. Thunderstorm chances drop significantly as moisture retreats southward.
