Pueblo, Colo. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to fire up across southern Colorado Monday afternoon, bringing the risk of hail, damaging winds, and localized flash flooding to several counties. The storms are most likely between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with conditions favoring quick development near the mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, hail up to 1.25 inches in diameter and wind gusts up to 60 mph are the main threats. The storm zone includes Teller, Fremont, Custer, Huerfano, and Costilla counties, where flooding in low-lying areas is also possible. While the tornado risk remains low, an isolated spin-up cannot be ruled out.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 50 through Cañon City and U.S. 160 in La Veta Pass should prepare for sudden downpours and poor visibility. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid flooded roadways, charge devices, and move vehicles indoors where possible. Outdoor activities and mountain travel could be disrupted by fast-moving storms.

The most intense activity should diminish after sunset, though additional showers could linger into the night. Weather officials say more storm chances may return later this week.
