Pueblo, Colo. – Severe thunderstorms could hammer southern Colorado Monday afternoon and evening, bringing 60 mph wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rainfall to the I-25 Corridor and San Luis Valley. The National Weather Service warns that storms may begin developing over the southern mountains early this afternoon before sweeping southeast across the region.
According to the US National Weather Service in Pueblo, the most intense storms are expected in areas south of Pueblo, including Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Alamosa. Affected zones include the southern I-25 Corridor and counties within the southern San Luis Valley, where hail up to 1 inch and strong outflow winds are likely. Frequent lightning and localized flooding may also accompany stronger storm cells.
Drivers along I-25 and Highway 160 should prepare for sudden changes in visibility and road conditions. Residents are urged to stay weather aware, delay outdoor plans, and have multiple methods of receiving emergency alerts. Mobile devices should be fully charged in case of power outages.
Storm activity is expected to taper off by late evening, but more thunderstorm chances remain in the forecast through midweek. Additional advisories could be issued later today.
