Pueblo, CO – A powerful spring storm system is triggering multiple weather threats across southern Colorado, bringing heavy mountain snow, dangerous winds, and elevated fire danger through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 11 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Saturday for the Sawatch, Mosquito, La Garita, and San Juan Mountains. Additional watches cover the Sangre de Cristo and Rampart Ranges starting at 6 a.m. Friday. Snowfall is expected to be moderate to heavy, especially at higher elevations, with hazardous travel conditions likely due to low visibility and slick roads.
Meanwhile, a High Wind Warning is in place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday for southern areas including Alamosa, Trinidad, and Walsenburg. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, posing risks of downed trees and power lines, especially for high-profile vehicles.
A Red Flag Warning also runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, covering much of southeastern Colorado, including Pueblo County. Strong southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph and humidity as low as 5% may rapidly spread any fires that ignite.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects, and use caution when traveling through mountain passes or open plains.
