Denver, Colorado – A spring surge of wind and dangerously dry air will grip central Colorado Sunday, setting the stage for fast-moving wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday for large portions of the northeast plains, Palmer Divide, and South Park. Winds will surge from the south at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching 45 mph—strongest over elevated terrain along I-25 and the Palmer Divide. Relative humidity will plummet to as low as 11%, creating ideal conditions for rapid fire spread.

Residents in Douglas, Weld, Elbert, and Adams counties are urged to avoid outdoor burning or any activities that could spark flames, such as yard work involving chains or motors. Fire crews are on alert, and Red Flag Warnings may follow if conditions worsen.

Sunday will also bring sunny skies and a high near 80°F, but gusty winds and dry fuel loads increase fire risk through the day. Monday will turn milder, with a high of 67°F and a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
