Colorado Weather Alert: Colorado Springs Faces Critical Fire Risk Today With 71°F Spring Warmth

Colorado – Dry air and warming sunshine are quickly setting the stage for elevated fire danger across Colorado Springs this morning. As temperatures rise toward the low 70s today, gusty winds and extremely low humidity could allow fires to ignite and spread rapidly across the Front Range.

Drivers moving along Interstate 25, Highway 24, and Powers Boulevard will notice bright skies and mild temperatures through the morning hours. Conditions may feel comfortable, but the dry air over southern Colorado creates a hidden hazard across open grassland and foothill communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. today across portions of El Paso County and southern Colorado. Westerly winds between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts approaching 35 mph, will combine with humidity values dropping near 10 percent. This combination creates critical fire weather conditions.

Any spark could spread quickly through dry vegetation, especially along open areas west of Colorado Springs and near the Rampart Range foothills. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged today. Even small sparks from equipment, trailer chains, or cigarettes could start a fast-moving grass fire.

Temperatures climb near 71°F this afternoon under sunny skies, bringing an early taste of spring to the Pikes Peak region.

The warmth continues briefly Tuesday with highs around 72°F, but a cooler air mass arrives midweek. By Wednesday, temperatures drop noticeably into the low 50s, though sunshine will remain across southern Colorado.

Warmer conditions return late in the week, with highs rebounding toward the upper 60s and low 70s by Thursday and Friday as spring warmth spreads across the central United States.

Residents should remain alert today while the fire weather warning remains active.
