Pueblo, Colo. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across eastern Colorado this afternoon, bringing threats of large hail, damaging winds, and dangerous driving conditions along I-25 and into the southeast plains.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, storms will begin forming over the eastern mountains after 1 p.m. and track southeast through the afternoon. The I-25 corridor could see outflow winds up to 65 mph and hail reaching one inch in diameter. A more intense threat exists over the southeast plains, where storms may produce hail up to 2 inches and wind gusts of 75 mph.

Areas under highest threat include Pueblo, Trinidad, La Junta, and Springfield. The risk also extends into Lamar and rural counties bordering Oklahoma and Kansas. Residents in these regions should avoid outdoor plans and be prepared for sudden severe weather.

Travelers on I-25 and U.S. 50 should watch for sudden wind shifts, poor visibility, and slick roads. Secure loose outdoor items and charge mobile devices in case of power outages.

Storms are expected to diminish by late evening, but additional advisories or warnings may be issued. Stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or local alerts throughout the day.
