Grand Junction, CO – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Colorado and Utah from Wednesday afternoon through Friday evening, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to several mountain ranges.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, areas including the Gore and Elk Mountains, Grand and Battlement Mesas, and the West Elk and Sawatch Mountains in Colorado could see between 8 and 16 inches of snow, with localized higher amounts. Winds are expected to gust up to 55 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.
In Utah, the Eastern Uinta Mountains are forecasted to receive 10 to 20 inches of snow, with winds reaching 45 mph. The Tavaputs Plateau, along with the La Sal and Abajo Mountains, may accumulate 6 to 12 inches of snow above 7,500 feet. The Uncompahgre Plateau, Dallas Divide, and San Juan Mountains are also expected to experience significant snowfall and strong gusts up to 60 mph.
Officials warn that travel could become extremely difficult or impossible, particularly during the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Blowing snow may reduce visibility, and tree damage is possible due to high winds.
Residents and travelers are advised to monitor weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for potential road closures. Snow chains, emergency kits, and winter survival gear are recommended for those traveling in affected areas.
