Denver, CO – Colorado travelers heading into the mountains today are urged to exercise extreme caution, as snow and ice have created hazardous conditions across key routes, including I-70 near Copper Mountain and Berthoud Pass. With visibility reduced and roads slick, drivers are encouraged to check the latest conditions on COtrip.org before departing and consider delaying non-essential travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, icy and snow-packed roads are especially dangerous near mountain passes this morning, with additional snowfall expected to add up to two inches by the day’s end. Temperatures are hovering around freezing, exacerbating icy patches. Winds of up to 15 mph may also affect visibility, particularly around the Eisenhower Tunnel, increasing the risk of accidents on steep and winding roads.

Tuesday is expected to bring a temporary break in precipitation, with mostly clear skies and highs reaching 53°F in Denver. However, a new storm system will begin late Tuesday night, delivering a mix of rain and snow into Wednesday, further complicating mountain travel. Snow showers are forecast to intensify Wednesday morning, with potential accumulations of up to three inches in higher elevations and temperatures dropping to a high of 34°F in the metro area.

As the week progresses, the storm system will linger, with a 40 percent chance of snow on Wednesday night and continued precipitation possible through Saturday. Residents and travelers should prepare for challenging road conditions, including possible road closures, and stay updated through local weather services.

To stay safe, travelers are advised to carry winter survival gear, allow extra travel time, and heed all Colorado Department of Transportation advisories.
