Pueblo, Colorado – Severe thunderstorms could erupt across Colorado’s eastern plains Wednesday afternoon, bringing damaging wind gusts and hail up to 1 inch in diameter through mid-evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop from late afternoon into the evening hours, primarily impacting areas east of I-25 including Lamar, La Junta, and Springfield. A couple of these storms may reach severe levels, with wind gusts topping 60 mph and the potential for hailstones the size of quarters.

Counties most at risk include Baca, Bent, Prowers, and Kiowa, where outdoor plans may need to be adjusted. The NWS encourages residents to stay weather-aware, especially if traveling on U.S. Routes 50 or 287, and to have multiple ways to receive warnings. Flying debris and localized power outages are possible where wind gusts are strongest.

This marks one of the first significant severe weather days of the spring season for southeast Colorado. The threat window extends into Wednesday evening, and additional updates or warnings may be issued if storms intensify.
