Pueblo, Colo. – Fire danger will escalate across southern Colorado on Wednesday, with critical conditions expected in Pueblo, Canon City, Trinidad, and the San Luis Valley due to gusty winds and single-digit humidity levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Fremont, Pueblo, Huerfano, and Las Animas counties. Southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph will gust up to 45 mph, while humidity dips as low as 5%.

Conditions will worsen Thursday. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued from morning through evening, when gusts may reach 65 mph—heightening the risk of fast-moving, destructive wildfires.

Communities including Alamosa, Walsenburg, and Fort Garland are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and avoid activities that may spark flames. Fire departments across the region are on heightened alert, as any ignition could spread rapidly under these conditions.

This is the second round of Red Flag conditions in as many weeks, signaling an early and intense start to southern Colorado’s fire season.

Red Flag Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening, with potential upgrades for Thursday. Residents should monitor emergency alerts and be ready to act quickly.
